Engraving Guide

Every piece we make is engraved to order in our USA studio. This guide covers what fits, what to engrave, and how to check your text before it reaches the bench.

How many characters fit?

Each product page shows its own limit and a live preview as you type — the preview is what gets engraved. As a reference point, the coordinates cuff bracelet holds a single line of up to 30 characters.

Everything counts toward the limit: direction letters (N, S, E, W), minus signs, degree symbols, apostrophes, spaces and punctuation. A coordinate pair written as 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W uses far more of the line than 40.7128, -74.0060.

What people engrave

• Coordinates — a place written as latitude and longitude. Private by nature: it reads as numbers to everyone except the person who knows.
• Dates — an anniversary, a birth date, the day something changed.
• Names and initials — a partner, children, or the whole family across several pieces.
• Short messages — a few words, an inside reference, a set of initials.

Getting the coordinates right

You do not have to look anything up. Search an address or drop a pin on the map on the product page and we convert it to exact latitude and longitude for you. If you already have a coordinate pair, paste it in — then paste it back into a map and confirm the pin lands where you expect. This is the single most common source of engraving regret, and it takes ten seconds to check.

On precision and privacy. Four decimal places locate a spot to within about 11 metres. If the place is a home, consider using a nearby landmark, or trimming a decimal place, so the piece does not carry a precise home address in public.

Before you order

• Check spelling, capitalisation and dates carefully — the preview shows exactly what will be cut.
• Confirm the coordinate pin on a map.
• Custom orders include a photo proof before engraving begins; check it when it arrives.
• Because each piece is made for one person, engraved items cannot be re-cut. Personalized items are also excluded from standard returns, so the preview and the proof are your checkpoints.

Materials and how engraving wears

Our pieces are made from 316L stainless steel — the corrosion-resistant alloy used in watchmaking. Gold and rose gold styles are 18K plated over that steel core; black styles use a durable PVD coating. Engraving is cut into the steel itself, so it does not rub away, though plating on any brand's jewelry wears gradually with daily contact. See the care guide to keep it looking new.
