How to Take the Perfect Paw Print for Custom Jewelry
How to Take the Perfect Paw Print for Custom Jewelry
One of the most common questions we get is: “How do I get a good paw print photo for the necklace?”
The quality of the engraving depends entirely on the quality of the photo you send us. Here’s exactly how to capture a clear, detailed paw print that will look beautiful when engraved.
Method 1: The Clay Imprint Method (Recommended)
This is the most reliable way to get a perfect impression.
What you’ll need: - Air-dry clay or polymer clay (white or light gray works best) - A small rolling pin or bottle - A bowl of water - Paper towel
Step-by-step: 1. Roll the clay out to about 1/4 inch thick on a flat surface. 2. Gently press your pet’s paw into the clay. Apply even pressure. 3. Carefully lift the paw straight up (don’t twist). 4. Let the clay dry completely (usually 24–48 hours). 5. Take clear, well-lit photos of the dried imprint from directly above.
Image Prompt (FAL Klein): Clean flat-lay of white air-dry clay with a perfect dog paw imprint, soft natural light from the side, minimal styling, high detail, elegant and emotional pet memorial photography.
Method 2: Direct Paw Photo Method
If your pet will cooperate, you can photograph their paw directly.
Tips for success: - Do it after a bath when the paw is clean - Use natural daylight near a window - Place the paw on a plain, light-colored surface (white paper or towel) - Take the photo from directly above, not at an angle - Make sure the entire paw (including toe pads) is in focus - Take 10–15 photos and send us the best 3
Pro tip: Lightly dampen the paw with a little water so the pads stand out more against the fur.
What We Need From You
For the best engraving results, send us: - At least one very clear, well-lit photo - The paw should fill most of the frame - Good contrast between the paw pads and the fur/skin around them - No heavy shadows across the paw
We can work with clay imprints, ink prints, or high-quality photos.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Taking the photo at an angle (we need a straight-on view) - Using flash (creates harsh shadows) - Low lighting or blurry photos - Only sending a photo of the top of the paw (we need the pad side)
After You Send the Photo
Once you place your order and send the photo, our artisans will: 1. Carefully trace and optimize the paw print 2. Engrave it by hand onto your chosen pendant 3. Polish and finish the piece 4. Ship it with a small care card and gift box
Most custom paw print necklaces ship within 5–7 business days after we receive your photo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a photo of my pet’s paw while they’re standing? We strongly recommend the clay method or a flat paw photo. Standing photos are usually too angled and blurry.
What if my pet has very furry paws? We can still work with them. Just send the clearest photo possible and let us know — we’ll do our best to bring out the pad details.
Can I get both front and back paw prints? Yes. Many people order two necklaces or a two-sided pendant with one paw on each side.
Do you offer a clay kit? We don’t currently sell clay kits, but any air-dry clay from Amazon, Michaels, or a craft store works perfectly.

All process and hero images should be clean, instructional yet emotional, with soft lighting and minimal backgrounds.
Keep the session calm and brief
Choose a familiar space and prepare every material before bringing your pet over. Work in short attempts, reward cooperation, and stop if the animal becomes uncomfortable. A slightly imperfect print can still preserve the shape and character of the paw.
Photograph the clearest result in even light, keep the camera parallel to the print, and avoid heavy filters. Save the original high-resolution image in case a different crop or contrast adjustment is needed later.
